Vergence target selection in rhesus monkeys: behavior and modeling

Previous studies have shown that a LATER (Linear Approach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate) race model can be used to explain saccadic target selection and latencies. The goal of the present study was to determine whether a comparable model could be applied to the underlying decision-making processes involved in target selection for transient vergence eye movements in rhesus monkeys. Luminance co...

Shared target selection for combined version-vergence eye movements.

Primates frequently make rapid binocular eye movements to reorient gaze in both direction and depth. To explain the unequal movements made by the two eyes, it often is assumed that they result from the combined action of a conjugate saccadic system and a vergence contribution. Clearly such a scheme can only yield coordinated binocular movements if both systems are guided by a shared or coupled ...

Learned behavior of Rhesus monkeys following neonatal bilateral prefrontal lobotomy.

Bilateral ablation of dorsolateral frontal cortex in the newborn animal failed to produce the frontal lobe syndrome typical of the adolescent and adult stages. The crucial tests (delayed response, string tests, and discrimination learning) were performed 3 to 4 months postoperatively. At this time, no significant differences between normal animals and animals with prefrontal lesions were found.

Coordination of smooth pursuit and saccade target selection in monkeys.

The coordination of saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements in macaque monkeys was investigated using a target selection paradigm with two moving targets crossing at a center fixation point. A task in which monkeys selected a target based on its color was used to test the hypothesis that common neural signals underlie target selection for pursuit and saccades, as well as testing whether targe...

Self-agency in rhesus monkeys.

Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) have shown the ability to monitor their own mental states, but fail the mirror self-recognition test. In humans, the sense of self-agency is closely related to self-awareness, and results from monitoring the relationship between intentional, sensorimotor and perceptual information. Humans and rhesus monkeys were trained to move a computer icon with a joystick whi...
